I guess Fedora 12, Unite, dropped today. This means that I will need to upgrade my servers pretty soon.  I will post the intimate detail, as usual, once I’ve got them up to snuff.

On another note. I think I may put Google chrome OS alpha on my old day-to-day box and see what the skinny is. Provided it comes out soon. According to this link, and others, it should be out see. We’ll see.

New computer, New computer!!!!

So my 5+ year old computer is running fine but seems to be running a little slow for some apps. I was looking for a new case last week at tigerdirect and they were having a barebones sale I couldn’t pass up. Its a AMD Phenom X4 9750, MB, 8 GB RAM, 500GB HD, and case w/ PS.

I am burning Windows 7 now and will be trying to get everything together in a few minutes. Will post up how everything goes hopefully in a little while.

Server upgrade, again

Updated my main file server from fedora 10 to fedora 11 last night. Here’s the specifics:

Did yum clean all, and yum -y upgrade twice.

Then ran the rpm -Uhv release and release notes.

Did the yum -y upgrade and got the following:

–> Processing Conflict: DeviceKit-disks-004-4.fc11.i586 conflicts kernel < 2.6.26
–> Finished Dependency Resolution
DeviceKit-disks-004-4.fc11.i586 from updates has depsolving problems
–> DeviceKit-disks conflicts with kernel-smp
Error: DeviceKit-disks conflicts with kernel-smp
You could try using –skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: package-cleanup –problems
package-cleanup –dupes
rpm -Va –nofiles –nodigest

So I checked the version of the kernel installed via rpm -qa kernel\*

which yields:

kernel-smp-devel-2.6.20-1.2320.fc5.i686
kernel-smp-2.6.20-1.2316.fc5.i686
kernel-2.6.27.29-170.2.79.fc10.i686
kernel-headers-2.6.27.30-170.2.82.fc10.i386
kernel-smp-2.6.20-1.2320.fc5.i686
kernel-firmware-2.6.27.30-170.2.82.fc10.noarch
kernel-smp-devel-2.6.20-1.2316.fc5.i686
kernel-2.6.27.30-170.2.82.fc10.i686

So I removed the FC5 kernels…’yum erase kernel-smp-devel-2.6.20-1.2320.fc5.i686 kernel-smp-2.6.20-1.2316.fc5.i686 kernel-smp-2.6.20-1.2320.fc5.i686 kernel-smp-devel-2.6.20-1.2316.fc5.i686′

And re-ran the yum -y upgrade. Timing was

real    229m55.843s
user    132m51.444s
sys     34m40.311s

Rebooted and was on F11, no issues, except with my HTPC which needed to have NIS turned on at boot and fired up, an issue with that machine not the file server.

That was it. It’s getting to be a pretty easy process.

Technology 13 Aug 2009 12:35 am

Another upgrade

I upgraded another box (my HTPC to be) from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11.

I tried the pre-upgrade process and it sucks. I just used the tried and true yum method and it worked beautifully, no dependency issues what-so-ever, and this box uses KDE, unlike the previous upgrades.

Did  the normal rp, -Uhv for the release and release notes. Then did yum -y upgrade. Timing below:

real    157m29.151s
user    31m9.237s
sys     9m24.255s

After the upgrade I had some issues with networking. I don’t really use X so I disabled NetworkManager, and though I enabled the network service only. After a couple of days of frustration and debugging it turned out I needed to use chkconfig to make sure the network service runs at startup. Once that was complete, everything was hunky dory and I was running Fedora 11.

Next up, upgrading the main server. Hopefully it won’t have the same network issue since its completely headless, and I don’t want to tote a monitor down stairs to it.

For those of you thinking of refinancing

Since the FED pumped $1 trillion into the economy last week to try and lower loan rates, I’ve been looking at refinancing the homestead, again.

Since I couldn’t find a nice tool to compare what I currently owed and to a new loan I did what any decent programmer would do;  I built my own tool. It can be found here. Any questions or comment can be left here. Enjoy.

Server upgrade…completed

After over a week of work and lost more reading about yum and rpm than I care for I finally have my 333MHz computer upgraded to Fedora 10. See my previous posts for how I got to version 9. Going from 9 to 10 was the simplest upgrade yet.

I started with the rpm -Uhv to install the release and release-notes package, as usual.

Did the yum -y upgrade and got a dependency failure for avahi-0.6.17-1.fc7.i386 .

I tried yum -u upgrade avahi and retried to no avail. There was something wrong in the rpm database or something since I already had a newere version installed so I did rpm -e –noscripts avahi-0.6.17-1.fc7.i386 and that did the trick

Did yum -y upgrade and waited to see what I needed to fix next. There was nothing!! It did take a while though

real    151m27.489s
user    91m34.379s
sys     29m27.927s

Didn’t need to up upgrade the kernel or anything else, for a change. Rebooted and it came right up in Fedora 10. Now all I need to do is find something that will let me stream media to my xbox 360 and PS3 from this machine…

Server upgrade Fedora 8->9

Finally got Fedora upgrade to version 9 last night/ early this morning.

Here’s my mini-log, little longer than the ioncannon instructions:

Start off with the normal rpm -Uhv release release-notes

Fired off the yum -y update, it flies compared to prior updates!

Server upgrade….the saga continues

As of 23:46 CST 03/06/2009 I am finally running FC8.

Due to some issues with missing and circular dependency checking i removed mutt and rhythmbox, I don’t have audio on this machine anyways.

The I removed alsa-utils and a couple of other pre-FC8 packages that also had the FC8 version installed and were causing dependency issues, including OpenEXR for ligHero.so.4 and libIlmlib.so.4 (done easily via yum remove OpenEXR). Prior to that I removed kdebase, kde-settings-kdm, redhat-artwork-kde, kdelibs, kde-settings, and kdnssd-avahi. Normally, I don’t even have a monitor attached to the box so I don’t really care about KDE.

I also had to update glibc via yum and nss_compat_ossl and nss-3.11.7-10.fc8 via rpm (which I had to force since the FC7 claimed it was newer.

Fired off the yum -y update

Then I manually updated the kernel with yum update kernel.

rebooted again and now it looks like I’m ready to start upgrading to Fedora 9. WOOHOO!!

I don’t think I will re-install the removed packages (maybe mutt) since I don’t have a monitor, sound, or a GUI on this box. OH, if you are wondering about the times taking so long keep in mind this is a 333MHz, from like ‘96!

Gran Torino

Saw Gran Torino tonight. All I can say is AWESOME. I got to the theater a few minutes late (who cares about previews) and they said the movie had not started since they sold not tickets. I’ll take one! The theater experience changes when you are the only one in the theater, its almost worth the  price.

Anyways, the movie was awesome. Its about an old Polish guy who’s neighberhood is being settled by forgeiners. He has a bad releationship (if it could be called that) with his own sons and he ends up befriending his asian forgein neighbor. He’s old school and drinks, cusses, and acts like it.

If your not bothered by racial slurs and obscene language, SEE THIS MOVIE. Beyond the rought exterior lies old school values that people today seem to have forgotten; like taking pride in your home, working hard for things, caring about your country, and helping your neighbors.

I laughed, I cried, I loved it! This is one movie I will definitely be buying when I comes out on blu-ray.

Technology 03 Mar 2009 11:27 pm

Server upgrade, pt.2

After getting FC 6 successfully installed the other day I thought upgrading to FC7 would be a breeze. I mean the repos aren’t even archived yet. So I updated the release rpm and pulled the trigger on the yum -y update and got complaints about all kinds of dependencies.  I started uninstalling things and finally had two packages let that would require removing yum. Not an ideal situation.

After much frustration and cursing I finally found this little gem. Scrolled to the bottom and it mentions making sure you have the update.repo setup correctly. Long story short, I didn’t. Fixed it and away it ran. Woke up this am and it had updated everything. Took just over 3 hours.

This evening I added back in the removed packages and made sure I am running the FC7 kernel. Then I fixed a small issue with my fstab file where one partition was not id’d by its label. I also installed the yum-fastestmirror package to speed things up in the future. Yum is now re-updateing 465 packages, installing 75 new packages (which I assume are dependencies??)

Hopefully, that will be done before to late so I can start the upgrade to Fedora 8 before bed. If not, and everything is working right in the am. I can start it before I leave for work.

I’m optimistic I will be streaming media to the XBOX and PS3 this weekend :)
